WBAT Autonomous scientific echo sounder system

Description

This device is used for stand alone collection of hydro acoustic data on backscatter of zooplankton and fish. It has an integrated battery and storage which last for weeks or months, depending on the depth of deployment and the settings, such as pin rate and pulse length. The device can be deployed pinging in any direction: to the side, upwards and downwards.

Technical Details

  • Self-contained transceiver unit with an underwater housing pressure rated to at 600m. The underwater unit includes all necessary data acquisition parts including electronics, battery and the necessary interface and control circuitry.
  • The system consumes low power and support a battery saving mode (i.e. deep sleep) that prevents power consumptions while waiting between the data recording cycles.
  • System is deployable for long durations up to 1 year.
  • System configuration supports
    - One split beam transducer at relatively low frequency, e.g., 38 kHz ( preferentially with a wide beam angle between 15 - 20°)
    - One single beam transducer at relatively high frequency, e.g., 200 kHz
  • System includes software that enables programming the system for deployment at required ping intervals and duty cycles.
  • Software allows for calibration
